New self-disseminating vaccine technology is emerging to prevent zoonotic infectious disease spillover from animal populations to humans. The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic exposed a need for a new form of disease control to battle the SARS, MERS, Ebola, and other infections known to spill over into human populations. Though these infections usually fail to cause widespread concerns, COVID-19 served as a game changer in approaching future pathogens of pandemic potential.
In 2020, Pub Med published information stating: One possibility to eliminate the threat of spillover before it occurs using vaccines capable of autonomously spreading through wild animal reservoirs. We are now poised to develop self-disseminating vaccines targeting many human pathogens. Still, essential decisions remain about how they can be most effectively designed and used to target pathogens with a high risk of spillover and/or emergence. In this Perspective, we first review the basic epidemiological theory establishing the feasibility and utility of self-disseminating vaccines. We then outline a road map for overcoming the remaining technical challenges: identifying high-risk pathogens before they emerge, optimizing vaccine design with an eye to evolution, behavior, and epidemiology, and minimizing the risk of unintended consequences.
Other researchers conducting the same study tout the new vaccine delivery method as groundbreaking, but what about the unintended consequences for those not candidates for certain vaccines?
Bill Gates said in a recent interview that the highly contagious omicron strain was a type of vaccine. If omicron was a contagious vaccine, was the pandemic a result of zoonotic spillover, or was it the accidental release of a self-disseminating vaccine?
